Geolocation in Viber – what is it
Viber gives you the opportunity to throw geotag to the interlocutor right in the messenger itself. The function only works when you turn it on, it requires a working Internet connection and GPS enabled. The option is very convenient. Just imagine: instead of rummaging through maps for a long time or writing down the address and ways to get to the point in detail, you just make a few taps – and your friend already has the address with all the necessary information. You can immediately redirect the link to the navigator and build the optimal route.
How to find out the user’s location
You just need to ask! When the user sends you a message with the included geo-tagging, later on for each of his messages it will be possible to track his location until he independently disables this function. Moreover, the data is quite accurate, because the application takes several sources of information.
- GPS satellite system – data is downloaded directly from satellites, which constantly exchange information. The error is up to 10 meters.
- Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Mobile networks give fairly accurate results and with a good signal level, you can estimate the distance literally to a meter. .
How to reset geolocation (geo-tagging)
First of all, the application must be allowed to use GPS data. Access is granted when installing the application or in its system settings in the phone settings.
To share your geo-tag, repeat the following:
- Click on the three dots next to the send message button (additional menu)
- Select the “Submit Location” section.
- Then specify “Send geolocation”.
- A link will be formed with your location. Click “send” – the interlocutor will immediately receive it.
How to track location in Viber without the knowledge of a person
There is no such possibility. You will have to at least once ask a person to share their location with you. In the future, you will be able to observe his movements according to the messages that he sends, however, if he turns off this function, you will not see anything else.
Turn off geolocation in Viber on the phone
Often we are frightened by the likelihood that someone might track us down or gain access to information that is not intended for him. And although Viber does not allow access to your data without your consent, still sometimes you want to completely protect yourself.
The function cannot be turned off directly, since it does not work in the background, but is turned on upon request. But you can restrict the application access to the GPS function.
On Android
Go to your phone’s settings and find the “Privacy and Security” section. Next, click the “Application Permissions” button, then select the “Location” item.
When the list opens, look for Viber in it, opposite the program name, turn off the lever.
On iphone
In the iPhone settings, we are looking for a messenger card. In the card we find the section “Geo-position”.
We put the parameter “Never”
We save the settings and restart the program. Now when you try to share location data, the utility will show an error.
